Summer Solstice at Stonehenge

Humans have long recognised the importance of the solstice. Dating back almost 10,000 years, Stonehenge remains one of our civilisation’s longest standing monuments. The sheer effort and human ingenuity at the time to move these stones, demonstrates the value its creators put on aligning elements of the earth, with the sun, on the solstices.

Back in 2019, my husband and I were in the UK to introduce our first born to his British family. My mother-in-law ‘Catherine’ insisted on taking us to see as much of the beautiful West country as we had time for. This included a very early, and dark, start on 21st June, to travel to Wiltshire for Summer Solstice. Not appreciating the full background at the time, I was surprised to be one of over 10 thousand people making their way to the stones and eagerly waiting for the sun.

Drumming provided our sunrise soundtrack which could be heard for miles around. Peeking up behind the Heel Stone, the ancient entrance to the Stone Circle, rays of sunlight began channelling into the heart of the monument. It really was something else.

Many celebrated with music, song, dance, yoga. Others simply walked amongst the enormous stones, hoping to connect to part of their ancient energy and lost stories. Every stone was unique and looking on the faces of those around me, it genuinely felt like a shared magical moment for us all.

It left me, for one, truly feeling the influence of the season in my soul. We didn’t travel to the Northern Hemisphere just for this experience, but I feel so grateful for it and clearly it’s always stayed with me, influencing the name of my business.

I value taking time to connect with life and land on our planet.

If you feel similarly, please allow yourself to reflect and recognise the importance of this time, which humans have marked for centuries.
